JLC Military Career

Dad sat down at age 71 and made a recording recalling his military experience.  He spoke into the same cassette recorder shown below in an earlier post. I've begun to break the 90 minute recording into chapters. Here is the first installment recorded on August 28,1990.

 Chapter 1 - ROTC 1936-1940

The Powder Room Collection (June 2008)

Wedding Photo 1943

This photo is hanging on the wall in my parents apartment at Buckingham's Choice (in the powder room actually). From left to right: Jean Stevenson, Buddy Linton, Millie Lou Linton, John Carnochan (groom), Samuel C. Linton (Mempop), Emily Kent Linton (bride), Bob Wallace, Agnes Carnochan, Courtenay Harrison, Betty Linton. Beyond Betty in the background is Emily Marbury Linton (Memaw). The photo was taken by John Carnochan Sr. (Grandaddy) in the moments before the ceremony.

Here's a blast from the past

This work of art was created by sister Susie, but not sure of the details. I recall it having various homes while on Round Hill Road . . . it's now proudly displayd in the master bedroom at 7301 Ava Lane.

Bertoia Diamond Chairs, set II

Here are the other two Bertoia chairs - I have no details, but I believe there exists a receipt that includes the couch, 2 bertoia chairs and a few other things as well. Can't remember the date, but 1957 rings a bell - could be way off there. Here are the chairs in their new home . . .

Bertoia Diamond Chairs

The first ones were purchase in 1964 while we were at Folly Quarter Road. But weren't there others purchased later? Did our original set have covers?

Cedar Chest

There are so many cedar chests. What is the story of this one? Who are the main characters in its story.

Granddaddy Photo

Mom and Dad have this photo in the den at Buckingham's Choice. It's such a classic photo of the original JLC. Mark Wallace has this jacket and knows a lot about it.

Does the light meter still exist?

Needlepoint Chair

This chair and stool I remember from Hagerstown. Is that right?

Secretary

Between the chairs is the secretary that for years was in the "back parlor" – or whatever we called that room - at Holly Springs Farm.

Dog Tags

I've got Dad's dog tags. Praise be that he is the one who gave them to me.

Glass Urinal

This in not a wine carafe. It is a urinal we think is from the Long family, from Hagerstown.

John and Emily's Sofa

Robert Marbury Carnochan and Addison Marbury Carnochan watching the Texas Longhorn basketball game.
I wonder if Addison Marbury's great-great-great-great grandfather, Addison Marbury, ever snuggled with his son, Robert Marbury, on their sofa in Southern Maryland?

Baby Mommy

I also have this photo of Mom on the ice pond. It's the ice pond, yes? Who took this picture? My guess is that it's the winter of 1922-23.

What was she thinking?

Baby Daddy

I now have this framed triptych of photos of Dad. But taken when? Maybe he was one? Not yet two, right?

What was he thinking?

Condiment Set

This piece is from the farm.

Sony Walkman

This cassette recorder was a gift to Dad on his 70th birthday in 1988. His six children all chipped in and bought it for him.
Nineteen years later, after I inherited the Walkman, I used it to playback a tape of songs my Dad recorded in the 1940s. The cassette was a gift that Mom gave him for the same birthday.
Play this performance of "Sympathy" from 1947. On the same cassette are performances of "The Lord's Prayer" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy."

Cane Bottom Chair

One of two that came from the farm.

Oak Desk

This is the oak desk that was in the finished basement next to the door to the garage. It arrived here in Jamaica Plain a good month after it was loaded up in Frederick.
Barbara is putting it to good use.

This is what a Radiola III looked like (see comment below).

John

It was amazing how civilized the house remained even after half it's contents were gone.

Emily

My mom, watching the world go by.

Moving

John and Emily moved from their home of 42 years and a lot of their stuff was scattered, mostly to their children.
